Hey there lovelies, today were going to be talking about simple ways you can help protect the environment! These are things you can incorporate into your everyday life, to help reduce waste, reduce the over use of plastic, and become more environmentally friendly.

Lets talk reusable products, reducing the use of plastic is a huge way to help keep the ocean, roads and wooded areas clean. It also helps reduce the risk of sea animals and land animals ingesting harmful plastic and the chemicals in them.

  • Reusable water bottles: So here is a crazy statistic for you, if on average humans drink two to four water bottles a day, by using a reusable water bottle you are saving 1,200 to 1,450 plastic water bottles a year! Thats insane! You can purchase a reusable water bottle for under ten dollars at almost any retail store. Save money and save plastic all while saving the planet!
  • Reusable grocery bags: Just like water bottles, those plastic bags you get at grocery stores can end up in the ocean, and become very harmful to animals living there. Plastic bags can also end up in the soil, releasing harmful chemicals, and if any animals eat anything in that soil, they can get seriously sick.
  • Reusable straws: Sadly most plastic straws are too lightweight to make it through the mechanical recycling sorter, making this almost fake recyclable. Meaning that even though it should be recyclable, it actually ends up in the ocean. This can cause lots of harm to the marine life who are inhaling these plastic straws

Obviously we can’t reduce the use of plastic all together in our life, so when you do use plastic make sure to RECYCLE. Make a conscious effort to dispose of all plastic waste in the recycling bin, so you can do your part, in making sure the plastic ends up in the right spot. Get a bin from the dollar store, stick a recycling sticker on it, and let everyone in your household know where the plastic bottles should be disposed of. This is probably the easiest and most effective way to help the environment.

This means that any product you use, the bottle its in, is made out of 100% recyclable ingredients. For example I use the “Love Beauty And Planet” shampoo, conditioner and deodorant, and all of those items are made out of materials that can be recycled and reused! When items are recyclable and reusable, they don’t end up in landfills, the ocean or places that can be harmful to animals. Be conscious of what your buying, it might cost a few more dollars but its so worth it to help the environment.

Creating a compost can seem more difficult than it actually is. I bought mine atΒ  bed bath and beyond, but you can order a compost can on amazon or you can make one yourself. Be sure to look into products and food that compostable and those that are not. For example, I keep my compost can next to my sink and anytime I throw out my coffee in the filter I toss it in my compost can. Most coffee filters are 100% compostable, and will dissolve into the soil nicely. Tea bags, banana peels, orange peels, stems on vegetables are a few things that are awesome for composting. Then when your can fills up take it to your garden and fold it into the soil. This will allow all the vitamins and nutrients from the compostable items, to sink into the soil. Best of all it will help make sure these items don’t end up in places they shouldn’t be!

This is another awesome way to help reduce our footprint on the earth. Throw away all those harmful cleaners full of chemicals, they are not only harmful to the environment but also very harmful for our health. You do not want to be inhaling bad chemicals from cleaning products! Cleaning with vinegar is an organic way to get the job done. It gets rid of bacteria while still making everything look spotless. Vinegar is also awesome for getting rid of ants of small bugs in your house. Bug spray is another product that has a massive amount of chemicals in it. Lets save the green houses, the air, and the environment and start cleaning with vinegar!

  1. Sadly only a very small percentage of plastic is actually being recycled (as of right now at list). Most places are unable to recycle plastic straws because of the plastic they are made out of. Most items have a # somewhere on the package that states that stands for a certain type of plastic. Dependent on the type of plastic a recycling facility that recycles plastics with a #1 may not due recycle plastics with a #7. There’s so much to it – it’s overwhelming. “Plastic purge” (great book!) details some of the shocking statistics and also goes into explaining the plastics behind those numbers.

I love reusable bags and bottles btw! I’ve been using both for years now and have never looked bag. I have been thinking of getting reusable straws on several occasions now and every single time I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t need it as I rarely drink out of glasses and never buy drinks out. I’ve grown so used to drinking out of my water bottle, whether I am at a restaurant, at home or at a friends house. It’s just so freakin’ convenient! Great post btw!! πŸ™‚

    1. I love when I am able to learn more about recycling and the environment! Thanks so much for sharing! I just ordered reusable straws and I feel so much better about using them! Everyone needs to read this comment so they can understand that plastic is hardly ever recycled! πŸ™‚
